STEM Initiative

CCS creates and supports a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Initiative each year that serves Pre-K through 12th grade students. Some key elements of the program are listed below. If you have any questions or would like to participate, please contact Gina Smearsoll at (513) 874-8500.

  • Robotics Program:
    • 3rd-4th grades - Lego WeDo Robotics Instruction
    • 5th-6th grades - Lego Mindstorms NXT Robotics Instruction Optional after-school Robotics Club
    • 7th-8th grades - Lego Green City Challenge Using Lego NXT Robots
  • Environmental Education Program:
    • Pre-K-6th - Outdoor Education Programming (including hiking and Mill Creek exploration)
    • 4th grade - Veggie U (Vegetable Growing Unit)
    • 5th grade - Environmental Detectives Unit
    • Pre-K-8th grades - Expert speakers visits throughout the year
    • 9th grade - Cooperative outdoor citizen science project with Groundwork Cincinnati, Mill Creek
  • Chess Program:
    • 1st-6th grades - Chess Instruction in the Classrooms and optional After-School Chess Club
    • 7th-12th grades - Optional After-School Chess Club
  • Technology Integration in Science:
    • 4th-12th grades - Instruction with Vernier LabQuests (data collection devices and sensors)
  • Science Through Inquiry:
    • Pre-K-3rd grades - Great Explorations in math and Science Units
    • 4th-12th grades - Hands-on Inquiry Lab Investigations
  • Math Competition:
    • 3rd-8th grades - ACSI Math Competition
  • Techolympics
    • 9th-12th grades - High Schools Technology Conference and Competition
