CCS Chess Club
Chess Club is a fun opportunity at CCS, usually January through April. The club is open to any 1st-6th graders interested in chess. All levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. The club will focus on how to play the game of chess, the strategy involved in playing the game, and learning to use tournament rules (for advanced players). Our goal is for the students to have fun and learn to be better chess players.
Important: The game of chess requires concentrated attention for long periods of time. If your child struggles to sit still for an hour for a game, this might not be the best fit for him/her.
Students can bring their snack or can purchase a snack for $1.00 from After-School Care. Club usually begins by having a snack in the cafeteria from 3:15-3:30 p.m., and then head to the library for attendance. After attendance, the students will be split into several different rooms for chess play.
Mrs. Smearsoll and parent volunteers will lead the club. If you agree to help at least once a month, the club fee is waived!
The cost of the Chess Club is $50 per student. This fee includes:
- participation in the club
- CCS Chess Club t-shirt (Students receive new shirts during their first year of chess club and when they outgrow their previous shirt.)
- entry into a CCS tournament to be held in April
- pizza on the day of our tournament
- $10 toward registration for the Queen City Classic Chess Tournament at Paul Brown Stadium, usually in March
Pick-up Information: The club will end promptly at 4:30 p.m. Parents may enter the building for pick-up at the south doors. Pick up will take place at the bottom of the steps in the gym. Any student not picked up by 4:35 p.m. will be escorted to After-School Care. Parents will be responsible for the cost of After-School Care after 4:35 p.m.
Registration: To sign up, completing a registration page is necessary.
