A Day in the Life of a Kindergarten Student
Kindergarten is a busy, active, and fun place to be!
The elementary aide will take you to the restroom by table color while your teacher checks for notes and takes attendance.
We will start our day with pledges to the American and Christian flags and the Bible.
We transition into our Bible time, about a half hour, sweetly singing our weekly memory verse, reading God’s Word and talking about a Bible story. We conclude with class prayer time.
It’s snack time; you may go get your healthy snack from your cubby.
Now we’ll spend about 1 and a half hours doing Language Arts activities. These activities consist of Letter People, writing, phonemic awareness, and centers. You’ll often see us throughout the building and grounds looking for the Letter People. Once, Miss “I” was in the Nurse’s office because she had an itchy itch! One day, we wore our pajamas to school just like Mr. “P”.
Now it’s math time, about 50 minutes. We begin math with a whole group lesson moving to hands-on manipulative practice; we like to do hands-on activities! We’ll end with a pencil-paper follow-up.
Our special class today is Music. We sing, dance and play instruments.
Those in the Half-day program are dismissed at this time. Bye friends, see you tomorrow! For the Full-day students, it’s lunch time. We may pack our lunch or purchase a hot lunch. We have a 30 minute recess after lunch.
Each afternoon we alternate between teaching Science and Social Studies. We may go outside to gather leaves or even play in the snow!
Enrichment activities are done in the afternoon, too. One day a week, we learn through centers.
Time to pack-up all of our things; class is dismissed at 3:10.
A Day in the Life of a First Grade Student
We begin our day with “Morning Work.” You’ll begin working quietly, while your teachers meet with you individually to check your planner and get all notes and homework from the day before.
Next, we have Prayer and Pledges to the American and Christian flags and to the Bible.
We move to Bible time for about a half hour where you’ll hear a Bible story and practice the weekly memory verse.
At 10:00am, we’ll take a break and have snack. Most days we listen to children’s Bible songs while we eat.
At 10:30, we go to morning recess; either outside or in the gym if it’s raining.
Math time comes next (about 1 hour). We start with “Math Meeting,” which is a whole group lesson involving daily activities that include changing the calendar and weather chart, counting money, locating shapes in the classroom and completing the daily number pattern. We move to hands on manipulative activities such as blocks, shapes, geoboards, linking cubes and flash cards. Finally, we reinforce all of our practice activities with a writing exersize. We work on side A of a daily page and send side B home for homework. Often we have math fact practice as well. We’ll complete side A of a math fact worksheet and check it together in class. Then side B is sent home for homework.
Each day the children go to one or two specials classes. Today, we’ll go to the Library. We’ll spend time learning how a library works and check-out books to read at home.
We’ll go to Lunch and Recess from 12:00pm to 12:45.
Language Arts activities are next and last for one and one half hours. These include phonemic awareness, phonics rhymes and chants, reading and writing activities. We divide into small groups as necessary to focus on skill reinforcement while other students spend time in learning centers.
Later in the afternoon we spend about one hour working on the Science/Health or Social Studies unit we are emphasizing. Many times we conduct experiments or watch videos to reinforce what we are learning.
At 3:00pm the children prepare to go home for the day!
A Day in the Life of a Second Grade Student
Students start the day by putting away their backpacks and coats and begin working on their morning work which consists of English and Math review.
After discussing the morning work, we will say the pledges, sing praises to the Lord and begin the daily Bible lesson. During the first semester, we’ll study the Israelites as they were slaves in Egypt through the reaching the Promised Land. The second semester consists of studying the miraculous life of Jesus.
Reading and Language Arts begin after Bible. Each week, you’ll read a story and discuss various elements of the story focusing on vocabulary, spelling and high frequency words. You’ll also spend 15 - 20 minutes a day independently reading and taking Accelerated Reader (AR) tests. You can earn prizes from the library based on AR points.
During mid-morning, we will eat a snack that we brought from home and have a fifteen minute recess, which breaks up the long morning before lunch.
English follows Reading and Spelling instruction. We use the” Shurley Method” to identify parts of speech in a sentence. This morning, we will sing jingles that define each part of speech and then label all parts of a sentence. Each student can label subject nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, article adjectives and prepositions in sentences orally as well as on paper.
After English, we’ll go to our daily Special class which for Monday is Art class. We’ll spend forty minutes learning about various elements of Art and having lots of fun!
Lunch and recess for 1st through 3rd grade begins at noon.
Once recess is over at 12:45, you’ll come back to the classroom for Math instruction. Today, we are using game spinners to predict the outcome and probability of landing on a specific color. Each of you will use hands-on manipulatives to practice skills learned in the lesson.
Science/Social Studies begins as we study solids, liquids, and gases. We’ll read a section from our science textbook and conduct experiments on why liquids take the shape of the container it is in.
To end our school day, you’ll write in your journals or compose a writing piece for your second grade writing portfolio.
The day has gone quickly, we’ll pack up in time to catch our bus or ride home.
A Day in the Life of a Third Grader
Good morning! This morning you will need to get out your writing journal. The topic is on the board. While you are writing, your teacher will be checking your planner and you will hang up your book bag and jacket.
Our Pledge Leaders will lead us in the pledge to the American and CHristian Flags, and Bible. Then our class will share prayer requests and we will pray together.
We will take our restroom break and return to the room for our Accelerated Reading (AR) time. Don’t forget to write a story summary when you have completed a book before taking the AR test. It will help you improve your comprehension!
Next we will work on our Guided Reading story for the week. We will work on comprehension pages, vocabulary, spelling, and handwriting during this time.
It’s time for our morning recess. Please remember to take your snack with you!
We’re off for our special for the day. We may have Computer Lab, Physical Education, Art, Music, Spanish, or Library. We love the things we learn from our Specials teachers!
When we return from our special area class, we will be working on our English grammar. We are exceptional students when it comes to labeling sentences with the parts of speech. The jingles we use make it a snap to remember the parts of speech.
Our last activity before lunch is writing. Our writing portfolios will be filled with many formal writings from the school year. Examples include personal narratives, how-to directions, friendly letters, cross-curricular pieces, research projects, short stories, and a poetry unit. We learn to use a lot of “juicy” descriptive words in our writing.
Lunch and recess is our time of fellowship and fun! We thank God for our food and the strength it gives us to serve Him. Enjoy!
Following lunch, we take a restroom break and our teacher reads aloud from a picture or chapter book.
While we’re gathered on the floor, we recite our weekly memory verse from the Bible together. Our teacher may do a lesson with us from the Bible, or we may work on a Christian character trait. We want to learn to be obedient followers of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Now we’re ready to begin math. The biggest thing we learn in third grade is multiplication and division. We’ll be super mathematicians when we head to fourth grade.
The end of our day we focus on Science or Social Studies. Each quarter we cover a different subject. These units are always exciting and we are able to do a lot of experiments and projects.
Before we go home we copy our homework from the board in our planners. We gather mail from our mailboxes and pray together. God had blest us with another wonderful day in third grade!
A Day in the Life of a Fourth Grade Student
Beginning in Fourth Grade, students spend part of their day with each teacher; one teaches Bible, Science, Math, and Spelling, the other teaches Bible, English, Writing, Reading, and Social Studies.
Welcome to class! Time to copy the assignments from the board into your agenda planner, write your Bible verse for the week and write in your journal.
Now it’s time for our Specials class; Spanish. Hola! Today we are preparing for International Week. We will perform Spanish dances and a bullfight for each class.
Bible time is spent taking prayer requests and praying and we participate in a Bible lesson and activity.
We have a portable Science Lab that we use to conduct experiments during our lesson time; this makes learning fun!
A spelling list is given every week. We review our words for the week using different games.
During Math time, we’ll review yesterday’s lesson, check our homework and learn something new. We have a homework assignment every night.
Lunch and Recess are from 11:20 - 12:00. We love to play football, Knock-out (a basketball-like game) or just visit with our friends.
Time to switch classes. We like having each teacher for part of the day.
It’s time for English and Writing. At CCS, grades two through six learn grammar using the Shurley Method. Shurley English uses jingles to teach the parts of speech and the mechanics of grammar. Unique sentence flows are used to help students identify the parts of speech. We use the 6 + 1 Traits Writing Program; currently, we’re writing our own fairy tales.
We will now read a chapter together from a children’s novel and discuss the story or talk about the author’s writing style.
In Social Studies this year, we concentrate learning about the great state of Ohio. We will take a field trip to Fort Ancient and learn about native Ohio Indians. We also go overnight to Camp Kern in the spring where we participate in a living history program.
3:00 already! It’s time to switch back classes and pack up for dismissal at 3:10.
A Day in the Life of a Fifth Grade Student
Like Fourth graders, we spend our day with both teachers. One teaches Bible, Science, Math, and Spelling; the other English, Writing, Reading, and Social Studies.
We may arrive at school anytime between 7:30 and 8:15. If the weather is nice, we go outside from 7:45 until 8:10. Time for school to start - we unpack our backpacks and copy the assignments from the board into our agendas.
Prayer requests and prayer are the perfect way to begin our day! This is followed with a Bible lesson and activity.
Science is especially fun when we do a lab and learn a new concept.
Now it’s time for Math. We’ll first check our homework and review; P.O.D. (problem of the day) is introduced as well as our new assignment.
Our Specials class today P.E. We participate in the Presidential Fitness program each year and try to better our record!
Lunch and Recess with the 4th through 6th graders is 11:20 - 12:00.
Time to switch classes.
English and Writing are next in the teacher’s lesson plan. We’ll practice our Shurley English lesson or write a short story that will be added to our writing portfolio.
Reading from a children’s novel is always enjoyable. Currently, we’re reading Frindle.
Since we know all about our state, it’s time to move on to United States History during our Social Studies time. We will learn all of the states and their capitals. Everyone will do a State Report which includes a poster and food from that state.
Study Hall - For the last half hour of the day the fifth graders work on any unfinished assignments from the day. See you tomorrow!
A Day in the Life of a Sixth Grade Student
Our classrooms are upstairs and have just been newly refurbished. After we have put our things away and take our seats, there is a warm-up activity on the board for us to work on. Then we have devotions where we read a passage from the Bible. Every day we study a Bible lesson and pray for one another.
Next, we’ll review our math homework and work on a new lesson. We have math homework every night.
We have our own Beginners Band made up of fifth and sixth graders. We practice together, have sectionals or a general music class. Students who don’t go to band or music have study time in the classroom.
At 11:00, we switch classes and go to the other Sixth Grade teacher where we’ll begin with Language Arts.
At 11:20 we eat lunch which is followed by recess until 12:00.
Language Arts consists of a lot more writing this year in order to prepare for the Ohio Graduation Test and college entrance exams. Our Shurley English studies throughout elementary school are being put to good use!
Toady, our Specials class is Computer where we are currently learning how to do research for a paper.
We finish the day with Social Studies, this year concentrating on World Cultures and Geography.
3:00 o’clock, time to pack up and get ready to go home.
