Board meeting CCS mission is key

School Board

Purpose and Functions

The Cincinnati Christian Schools (CCS) board is responsible for protecting and furthering the mission of CCS, establishing the vision, and insuring the long-term viability, growth, and stability of our school.

The school board governs CCS as servant leaders of our Lord Jesus Christ, through a cooperative, collegial relationship with the superintendent, based on mutual trust and respect, ensuring accountability and unity. The superintendent, under the governing direction of the board and within policy guidelines established by the board, leads and manages the CCS staff and faculty on a daily basis to achieve excellence in every endeavor.

The Mission of Cincinnati Christian Schools: Cincinnati Christian Schools, partnering with Christian families, provides a Bible-centered, 21st century quality educational program to equip, train, and disciple students to follow Christ and impact culture.

Connecting with the School Board

Should you have a specific question or issue that you would like the board to address, please note the following:

  • For Ideas: The board requests that you contact the appropriate principal with your idea or requests. If board input is required/needed, then the principal (and/or superintendent) will seek that information appropriately.
  • For Issues: The board requests that you follow the Matthew 18 principle of first working directly with those involved to earnestly seek resolution to your issue before elevating it to the next level, including one’s direct supervisor, or in the case of a non-staff member, the principal, and then the superintendent. Challenging issues should only be brought to the board when attempts to resolve them with those more directly involved have failed.
  • If attempts at resolution are unsuccessful, simply, email your question/issue or issue to the board chairman. The board will review your request and respond in a timely manner.

His strength lies in Christ and he hopes that with this God will use me to glorify His work at CCS.

Personal Testimony: "Being raised in a Christian home from birth, I came to realize at the age of 8 my sins and my need of a savior. I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior and was baptized into Christ in 1973 at the New Burlington Church of Christ. In my early twenties, I found myself wondering if my belief in Christ was my parents’ or was truly my own. After many months of questioning my belief system, I came to the conclusion that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Roger achieved a designation of Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. Roger’s passion for helping children grow spiritually is evident in his involvement with Upward Sports, the world’s largest Christian youth sports provider. He started and headed up a soccer program for 5 years. He ran a basketball league for 2 years and has coached various Upward teams for 8+ years.

Personal Testimony: I was raised in a Christian home and asked Jesus to be my Lord and Savior after attending a summer church camp while in elementary school. My relationship with God matured as I matured. I was recalled to active duty in the Army in 2003. When I returned to my family, I began to feel a calling to actively serve God. My first real leap of faith in Godly service was as an assistant Upward flag football coach in 2008. In addition to my Upward career, I have served for several years in the tech booth for our church’s children’s service and have attended multiple summer mission trips with our church’s youth. I look forward to continuing my service to Christ while my kids attend CCS. Angie and I (and our kids!) feel incredibly blessed to have a Christian school like CCS so close to home.

Strengths OJ  Brings to the Board: He is passionate about youth and Christian educational development. OJ has a strong desire to actively work at helping make the vision become reality.

In his spare time, OJ enjoys playing bass guitar and coaching youth athletics which has in past included his son’s basketball teams and a youth Pop Warner football team that won a national championship in 1994. He currently coaches CCS Junior High basketball and football teams.

Personal Testimony: “I met my Savior at the early youthful age of 12. Like most Christian, I was put into compromising situations from time to time where I had to make key decisions that would shape my Christian walk for the the rest of my life. Growing up in an inner-city environment with a single parent, I began to learn that these decisions were sometimes life and death. As I grew in Christ, I began to learn the value of giving alms in my places of worship. I found myself giving my time and skill sets in an effort to help develop the ministry and the mission of the churches I would attend. The two pivotal moments in my Christian walk today include February, 1993 - while struggling with my finances, I was given the spiritual understanding of tithes, offering, alms giving and gaining stewardship of your finances. The other was my adoption of scripture Mark 2:2, which exemplifies the strongest faith walk and the reward for not letting any obstacle deter us from getting into HIS presence."

Mrs. Melissa Bertram, Board Member

Family Info:
Spouse’s name: Jon
Children: Alex - CCS ‘21, Jenny - CCS ‘24, Katie - CCS ‘24

Education Background: B.A. in Communications - Florida Atlantic University

Profession: Advertising, Marketing, Video/Commercial Producer

Strengths Melissa Brings to the Board: Melissa and her husband worked with youth in the church for many years and know how important a Christian foundation is for kids. She brings a strong marketing and branding background to the board, and feels this experience will help CCS continue to move forward.

In Melissa’s spare time she enjoys reading, taking walks with Jon and their dog, women’s bible studies, and watching her kids play sports.

Personal Testimony: While growing up, my family moved every couple of years for my dad’s job, so needless to say, we switched churches often. I was baptized when I was born and then again in junior high, when I made the decision to dedicate my life to Jesus. I remember being at church two to three times a week and just how filled with joy I was. After Jon and I were married, we became active in a local church and worked with youth for over 10 years. I feel God placed us with those amazing teenagers and taught us how to love unconditionally. I have been a part of many mission trips to New Orleans (Katrina clean up), Washington D.C., Mexico, Henderson Settlement, and The Happy Church (both in Kentucky). We enjoy spending time pouring the love of Jesus into others.

Personal Testimony: I was blessed to be raised in a Christian home and attended church regularly until my high school years. I still remember feeling God’s presence while sitting in church praying. During high school and college, I fell out of regular worship, church attendance, and spiritual growth. Soon after being married, my wife and I found the Vineyard church. We joined a small group, and people invested in me. It was during this dime that I developed a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Mr. John VanWeelden, Board Member

Serving on the School Board since 2014

Contact Information: Send an Email, (513) 293-0665

Family information:
Wife’s Name: Diane
Children: Jenna VanWeelden, CCS '14, Alex VanWeelden, CCS, '17

B.A. Social Science (Sociology), Miami University
MBA  Miami University, 1991

Profession: Financial Advisor

Strengths John Brings to the Board: "I believe my experience building a business and sitting on the boards of other Christian organizations are very useful. I am also comfortable with the process of casting/crafting vision. I love to teach. I am good at helping people understand abstract/complex concepts. I am a good communicator as well. My family has been greatly blessed by our experience at CCS, and I’d like to give back to the school."

Personal Testimony: "I became a believer in the fall of 1990.  Having attended church throughout my childhood, I knew the facts, but I did not know Jesus personally. My wife (my girlfriend at the time) had been praying for me to discover the truth about Jesus for years, but I wasn’t really interested. I finally began attending church with her in an effort to simply demonstrate my willingness to consider a personal relationship with Jesus. I didn’t necessarily expect anything to change. During this time, however, I sincerely invited him into my heart. Although I cannot state the exact day or time, I became a believer within a few weeks.  Shortly thereafter, I encountered the Holy Spirit in a very real way for the first time, and was baptized."
